As a NYC elopement photographer, my style sits somewhere between documentary and editorial. Documentary photography focuses on capturing moments exactly as they happen, observing rather than directing. Editorial photography, on the other hand, tends to be more guided and intentional, with posing or prompts that create a certain look or feeling. I’ve found that blending these two approaches creates the most authentic and enjoyable experience for my couples. Some moments of your elopement should feel completely natural, like you’re simply walking through the city together, soaking in the excitement of the day, barely noticing the camera. These are the moments where documentary storytelling shines.
I’m quietly observing, letting the moment unfold, and capturing the energy of the city and the emotion between the two of you. Then there are moments where I’ll step in with a little direction. Maybe it’s suggesting where to stand for the best light, guiding you into a pose that feels natural, or giving you a prompt that encourages interaction. This is where the editorial side comes in. Instead of stiff posing, it feels more like collaboration, we’re working together to create images that feel elevated but still very much you!
How This Style Shapes Your Elopement Experience
Something couples don’t always realize right away is that the style of your photographer impacts much more than the photos. It can also shape how your entire day feels. If you prefer not to be posed at all and want a completely hands-off experience, a strictly documentary photographer might be the right fit. If you prefer a photographer who is more involved and gives a lot of direction, then a fully editorial photographer might suit you better. Because I blend the two, my couples get a bit of both worlds. There are moments where I step back and let you just be together, walking through the city, laughing, celebrating, and experiencing the day naturally.

I might guide you into a pose or prompt, capture that frame, and then encourage you to relax and interact naturally with each other. Often those in-between moments, the laughter, the movement, the quiet connection end up becoming some of my favorite images from the day!
